Awake album Skillet
Apr 18th
This is the eighth full length studio album by the Christian Rock band Skillet. It was released on August 25 2009 and debuted at No.2 on the Billboard 200 album chart, making it one of the highest debuting Christian albums on that music chart. The album went Gold in the US on July 2nd selling close to 500000 units. The following year the album was certified gold by Atlantic Records.
The album tries to pass the message that Christians should never give up though the world seems to be getting crazier every day.
The album opens with the hit song “Hero,” from the opening chord this song grabs you and doesn’t let go. And with such a song as the first in an album you just get the feel of what the album is all about. From the beginning, the song remains unabashed as it speaks to all of us. The band says that the album was similar to their 2006 release Comatose. This is because the strings and guitars are almost the same only that Awake comes out more of a harder rock sound than Comatose. The album employs the use of Classic rock riffs, swirling drums, monstrous hooks and undeniably catchy choruses. The album contains 12 upbeat worship songs.
Songs from the album have been used for television commercials. “Awake and Alive” was used in the daytime drama “One Life to Live” on ABC in November of 2009 and during MLB playoff games. “Hero” was featured in Sunday Night Football commercials on NBC. Currently the song is featured in commercials for NBA on TNT.

Skillet Lyrics in Worship Songs
Feb 19th
Skillet is a Christian rock band that was created in 1996 in Memphis, Tennessee. Skillet has grown in popularity for their progressive style of rock music but they have also become a major contributor of worship songs and have leapt to the forefront of the worship genre. Worship songs continue to grow in popularity especially as commercially successful bands such as Skillet produce albums that are center around Worship Songs. Skillet’s most recent album Awake, is an example of a top christian album. The album was certified Gold and sold over 68,000 units in its first week. The fact that Skillet can have this level of commercial success with their writing and still continue to produce worship albums should be a testament to the important and prevalence of Christian worship songs in our society today.
Skillet has continued to produce quality worship songs and their band has emerged as a worship artist that has gone on tour for solely Christian worship type concerts. Skillet’s album Ardent Worship is dedicated solely to music worship songs. Skillet’s song writing is the main reason for their rapid rise in popularity. Skillet has managed to blend thoughtful lyrics along with progressive music styles into a unique blend of music that they have perfected.
Skillet is a great example of a leading Christian worship artist but there are many other Christian artists who write worship music. Steven Curtis Chapman is the most commercially successful Christian worship artist in history. He has sold more albums than anyone else and he continues to produce some of the top worship albums each year. The Christian bands Third Day, Mercy Me, Toby Mac, and The David Crowder Band are also all leading worship artists.
Worship songs have continue to progress in style over the past 50 years. There has been a significant trend towards more upbeat contemporary style worship songs over more traditional somber worship songs that have been sung in years past. The hymnal has been discarded and replaced with a slideshow of praise songs. Worship music however has not lost it’s central focus. The entire focus of any Christian worship song is just as it sounds, to lead the singer in worship. Many of these songs are sung in churches across America every Sunday morning. Many of these leading artists also participate in youth events, Christian rallies, and other big Christian gatherings. Many successful secular icons have even invited worship artists to perform at their events because of their popularity.
Worship music can take many forms. Skillet and other leading contemporary Christian artists have developed their unique version of worship music but there is still a large segment of Christians who still prefer the traditional hymn music Whatever style you choose the important thing is whether or not you agree with the intent of the music, and if that is true then the rest is only details.

Skillet Enjoy Success Of ‘Awake’ Album.
Dec 23rd
The Memphis, Tennessee Christan rock band Skillet continues to enjoy the success of their eighth album, Awake. The album of mostly upbeat worship songs was released on August 25, 2009 and a year later was certified gold by Atlantic Records, attaining sells of 500,000 copies.
The album debuted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 albums chart, making it one of the highest debuting Christian albums on that music chart. It tied Define The Great Line by Underoath and The Altar and The Door by Casting Crowns as the highest charting Christian rock album on Billboard’s 200 album charts. The band recorded the album in the fall of 2008 and into the first part of 2009 in Los Angeles at Bay 7 Studios.
Lead singer John Copper did most of the song writing for the album, writing over 40 songs before narrowing it down to twelve. Cooper has said that everything the band sings about on the album is “something someone can relate to.” Cooper has said his favorite song from the Awake album is “It’s Not Me It’s You.”
Skillet launched a 52 city tour in support of the album in September of 2009 with fellow Christan artists Decyfer Down, The Letter Black and Hawk Nelson. RED, Trapt, Darkest Days and House of Heroes joined the band earlier this year on the second leg of the tour.
Songs from the album have found their way to daytime TV and Sunday Night Football commercials. “Awake and Alive” was used in the daytime drama “One Life to Live” on ABC in November of 2009 and during MLB playoff games. “Hero” was featured in Sunday Night Football commercials on NBC. Currently the song is featured in commercials for the Los Angeles Kings on Fox Sports West and the NBA on TNT.
The songs “Hero” and “Monster” were used on the WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 video game soundtrack. Minor league hockey teams have also used the song and it was featured in a few pay-per-view wrestling events.
The band members have said in interviews that the album is very similar in style to the band’s 2006 album Comatose in that both feature strings and guitars, but Awake has a harder rock sound.
On Skillet’s website, the band describes its musical style as a combination of classic rock riffs mixed in with swirling drums and monstrous hooks along with undeniably catchy choruses.
Cooper has said that “we are living in tough times and we can find hope in Christ” and to focus on that. All together the band has sold more than 1.6 million albums worldwide. Skillet is now touring with Tobymac as part of the the Winter Wonder Slam Tour.
