Tenth Avenue North – The light meets The Dark album

The Light Meets The Dark is Tenth Avenue North’s second major label studio album, It come on the heels of their resent Dove Award for Best Song, “By Your Side” from their recent album Over and Underneath (2008). With one listen to The light Meets The Dark, it is obvious Mike Donehey, (lead vocals/acoustic guitar), Jason Jamison (drummer) and Jeff Owen (electric guitar/background vocals), are taking a bold step forward on their musical journey. The album was released on May 11, 2010 by Reunion Records.
On its second week after being released the album became #1 at Billboard charts (Christian Albums). It has stayed on the chart for 31 weeks and is currently at #11, It is estimated that by January 2011 it will be at 10. The album delivered a first single, “Healing Begins” which garnered 43 first-week adds among AC and CHR stations nationwide. The song encourages the listeners to pull down the walls and barriers that shield them so that God may get through them and heal them. The song, “You are more ” encourages listeners and makes them to learn that one is more to the choices that he has made, one is more than their past mistakes and that one is more than the problems they have created and that they have been remade a new. “House of Mirrors” the most powerful song of the album revolves around images of Christians being caught up in their own lives. All in all of the songs in the band’s sophomore release are authentic, heartfelt and confessional, it is all about brokenness , the universality of that brokenness, and how Jesus helps us meets the brokenness.

This is an American Contemporary Christian Music Band from West Palm Beach Florida. According to Mike Donehey (band Leader), the group met at Palm Beach Atlantic College. The band’s name comes from a Street name of the housing in which Mike and Jason Jamison used to leave in college; Jeff Owen joined them later from Indiana. And That is when all the Magic happened. The Band has become one of the brightest lights on the contemporary Christian music scene.
The Christian Rock band has Produced three independent albums, Broken Down which was released in 2002, Don’t Look Back which was produced in 2003 And Speaking of Silence which was produced in 2005 And an EP, 2002’s God with us, before signing with Reunion Records and producing Over and Underneath in 2008, and it begun a tour promotion of the album near that time. “Love Is Here” reached the Top 20 U.S. Contemporary Christian Music chart, and had reached #3 by June 2008. It was awarded the most played song on Christian Hit Radio that year.
The Lights Meets The Dark was the title of the band’s second album; it came out on May 11, 2010. Its first single, “Healing Begins” was 1st preformed at Baptist Church of West Palm on May 14 2010. This was in a way to helped Promote the album.
The band has toured with David Crowser and MercyMe and they have released the dates of their tours in the United States. They have won “The New Artist of the Year” award at the GMA Dove Awards in April 2009. In 2010 the band got a GMA Dove award for “Best Song Of The Year” for their Song “By Your Side”.

I was recently introduced to Tenth Avenue North while in Canada and they have quickly become my favourite and most listened to band. They have amazing heart-felt, worshipful music – without it being “typical church music”. The band has a way of addressing thoughts in a fresh and very melodic way, as is displayed in the song that I want to review today.

Songs Theme:
This song beautifully portrays the call of a desperate person, searching for God in times of struggle and hardship. It expresses the need to tangibly experience God by feeling and hearing. You hear the writers struggle with feeling worthy of God’s touch and his inability to share with God the inner workings of his life, because he is too ashamed.
But the response by God in this song is what really makes this song such a refreshing and healing, as God responds to this persons cry with an amazing chorus going into great detail that His love is ALWAYS there, and NEVER FAILS!
Song Writing Style:
I love the creativity in the writing of this song. As you read the first verse you will notice a pattern evolving of each emotion being carried to the next emotion. This really draws the listener to the lyrics and really effectively communicates the emotions that the song writer is feeling.
The structure of this song is very unique also. It doesn’t seem to have a bridge, and seems to be very similar throughout, but this does not come across as a bad thing, but instead allows you to focus on the chorus (which happens to be quite long!)
The depth of the chorus is one other thing that I really like. While most writers would cut the chorus to 4-6 statements, you will find that the chorus is 15-20 statements long. This allows the writer to really express the love of God and cover all bases, without having to leave a time (where God’s love is present) out.
Conclusion:
This is a beautifully written song, and sounds fantastic. I believe this song truly shows off the depth, talent and also worshippers heart of Tenth Avenue North, and I would strongly suggest that you at least check out this band.
